Borrero Bay (Bahía Borrero)

Borrero Bay, Bahía Borrero, is a quiet bay on the north coast of Santa Cruz, with a beach of white coral sand and clear, turquoise water, in one of the less visited corners of the island. Behind the beach, the dry coastal scrub climbs gently toward the interior.

The beach is an important nesting site for green sea turtles, which come ashore at night in the first months of the year to lay their eggs; their tracks are often seen on the sand in the early morning. Sea lions rest on the beach and marine iguanas on the rocks, while yellow warblers and Darwin's finches move through the bushes behind the sand.

The bay is a good place to swim and snorkel, with reef fish over the rocks, rays on the sandy bottom and green sea turtles, and reef sharks are sometimes seen farther out. A short walk along the beach and the edge of the vegetation completes the visit.

The visit is easy and relaxed, a good choice for a calm half day of beach and snorkeling. There is little shade, so sunscreen and a hat are useful.
