About the site
Seymour Airport, on the small island of Baltra, is where most Galápagos journeys begin: it receives the majority of flights to the islands, and many of our cruises start or end here. Built on the site of a Second World War air base, it was rebuilt as an ecological terminal that runs largely on solar and wind energy.
Flights arrive from Quito and Guayaquil. Before check-in on the mainland you buy the transit control card (TCT) at the airport, and on arrival in Baltra you pay the Galápagos National Park entrance fee in cash and pass a biosecurity inspection: fresh food, seeds and live plants cannot be brought into the islands.
The crew of your yacht usually meets you after the baggage hall and takes you by bus to the dock, a few minutes away, where the pangas carry you to the boat. Ships that start their cruise on Santa Cruz cross the narrow Itabaca Channel by ferry instead. On the way, many itineraries stop in the highlands of Santa Cruz to see giant tortoises.
Land iguanas, returned to Baltra from 1991 onwards, are often seen near the road, and frigatebirds and brown pelicans fly over the channel. On the day you leave, allow time for the baggage inspection before your flight back to the mainland.
