Baroness Lookout

Baroness Lookout, on the north coast of Floreana between Post Office Bay and Cormorant Point, is a viewpoint on a small hill above a turquoise bay fringed with mangroves. It is named after a self-proclaimed Austrian baroness who settled on Floreana in the 1930s and vanished in 1934, in one of the great unsolved mysteries of the Galápagos. Her name was Eloise Wehrborn de Wagner-Bosquet, and she loved to sit here watching the ships arrive.

After a wet landing, a short trail climbs to the lookout; the last part is steeper, with steps. From the top there are views over the red mangroves, the bay and Post Office Bay, and inland towards the highlands of Floreana. Your guide will tell the story of the baroness and the other settlers of the 1930s, whose lives and disappearances have inspired books and films.

The visit is usually combined with a panga ride along the mangroves of the bay, where sea turtles, golden rays, sea lions and, at times, Galápagos penguins are seen, and with snorkeling in calm water.

The walk is short and easy except for the final steps, and suits most travelers.
