Witch Hill (Cerro Brujo)

Witch Hill, or Cerro Brujo, on the north coast of San Cristóbal, is an eroded tuff cone rising above one of the most beautiful beaches in the Galápagos: a long stretch of white coral sand so fine it feels like powdered sugar. Charles Darwin is believed to have landed near here in 1835, at the start of his visit to the islands.

The panga brings you to the beach for a wet landing. Sea lions rest on the sand, marine iguanas bask on the rocks, and shorebirds such as whimbrels and ruddy turnstones run along the water's edge. Brown pelicans and blue-footed boobies dive for fish just offshore. Before or after the landing, a panga ride along the cliffs of the tuff cone shows its layers of volcanic ash and the seabirds nesting in its walls.

The clear, shallow water is good for swimming and snorkeling, with sea turtles, rays and reef fish, and some itineraries offer kayaking along the coast. From the beach, the view stretches across the channel to Kicker Rock.

The visit is easy and relaxed. There is no shade, so bring sunscreen and a hat.
