About the site
Concha de Perla, Pearl Shell in English, is a sheltered lagoon next to the port of Puerto Villamil, on the south coast of Isabela, enclosed by mangroves and lava rocks. A wooden boardwalk through the mangroves leads from the dock to the lagoon in five to ten minutes, and a small platform with a ladder takes you straight into the water.
The water is calm and clear, which makes it one of the best and easiest snorkeling spots in the Galápagos. Sea lions often swim around the snorkelers, green sea turtles feed on the algae, rays rest on the sandy bottom and schools of reef fish move among the rocks; marine iguanas and, with luck, Galápagos penguins can also be seen. Along the boardwalk, sea lions and marine iguanas rest in the shade of the mangroves.
Concha de Perla is free and can be visited without a guide. Cruises that call at Puerto Villamil sometimes leave free time to swim here, and it is a must for anyone staying on Isabela. Bring your snorkel gear, and keep your distance from the sea lions.
