Darwin Island - Darwin

Galapagos Islands

Darwin Island, named in honor of Charles Darwin, one of its most famous visitors, measures just 0.4 sq mi and it is one of the smallest islands in the archipelago. Located northwest of the main Galapagos Island group, it rises 541ft above sea level, and it is the remains of an extinct volcano. Not open to visits, the island is a great diving site, with a spectacular marine fauna, from whale sharks, hammerhead sharks, to green turtles, dolphins and rays. A variety of sea-birds also visit the island, like Masked and Red-footed boobies, the Darwin Mockingbird and the Swallow-tailed gulls.
