Devil's Crown

Devil's Crown, off the north coast of Floreana, is the rim of a submerged volcanic cone, its jagged points rising from the sea like a crown, and one of the most famous snorkeling sites in the Galápagos. There is no landing: the visit is made from the panga, by snorkeling or with a ride around the rocks.

Inside and around the crater, the eroded rock has become a natural reef, home to coral and to large schools of tropical fish such as yellow-tailed surgeonfish, king angelfish and parrotfish. Sea lions, green sea turtles, white-tipped reef sharks, eagle rays and stingrays are common, and Galápagos sharks and hammerheads are sometimes seen in deeper water. On the rocks above, red-billed tropicbirds, boobies, frigatebirds and pelicans rest and nest.

The currents around the crown can be strong, which is why it is considered a demanding site; your guide will choose the best moment and route, often drifting with the current.

Devil's Crown is best for confident swimmers, and a wetsuit is useful, as the water can be cool. Travelers who prefer not to snorkel can enjoy the wildlife from the panga.
