The Fausto Llerena Breeding Center, located on Santa Cruz Island, near the Charles Darwin Foundation, was started in 1965. Its purpose is to preserve the tortoise population of various Galapagos species. The center collects tortoise eggs and hatchlings, and after approximately 4 years they will release them on the islands of their origin, when they are sure they can survive on their own. You can walk on the 1.4km trail through the park and see not only turtle pens, but land iguanas as well, as they are also bred here.
