Puerto Baquerizo Moreno
Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, on the southwest coast of San Cristóbal, is the capital of the province of Galápagos: a relaxed town around Wreck Bay, with its own airport a few minutes from the waterfront. It is named after Alfredo Baquerizo Moreno, the first president of Ecuador to visit the islands, in 1916.
Sea lions are everywhere, on the beaches, on the benches of the waterfront promenade and on the boats in the bay. A short walk from the center, the Interpretation Center tells the natural and human history of the islands, and a trail continues to Cerro Tijeretas, Frigatebird Hill, with a lookout over the bay and a cove for snorkeling. Playa Mann, Punta Carola and La Lobería, a beach with sea lions and marine iguanas near the airport, are within easy reach.
Many cruises begin or end here, and some include a visit to the Interpretation Center, the highlands with El Junco Lagoon and the Galapaguera, or free time in town. With its hotels and restaurants, it is also a pleasant place to spend an extra night.
