About the site
Puerto Villamil, the main town of Isabela, is one of the most relaxed in the Galápagos: a few sandy streets, a long white beach lined with palm trees, and marine iguanas, sea lions and pelicans as everyday neighbors. It was founded in the 1890s and named after José de Villamil, a hero of Ecuador's independence who led the first settlement of the islands.
Most of the island's people live here, and the town is the base for visiting southern Isabela. The beach, two to three kilometers of fine white sand, is perfect for a walk at sunset, and the brackish lagoons just behind the town are one of the best places in the islands to see flamingos.
Within walking distance are the Concha de Perla, a sheltered bay reached by a boardwalk through the mangroves, where you can snorkel with sea lions, sea turtles and sometimes penguins; the Arnaldo Tupiza tortoise breeding center; and the Wetlands, which lead to the Wall of Tears. Las Tintoreras is a few minutes away by panga, and Sierra Negra volcano rises above the town.
Many cruises stop here to explore these sites, and the town is a pleasant place for a short walk, a coffee or a souvenir between excursions.
