Punta Mejía
Marchena is a large, remote island in the north of the Galápagos, between Santiago and Genovesa, with no visitor sites on land: it can only be visited in the water, at two marine sites. Punta Mejía is on its southwest coast, a shore of coves and grottos at the foot of the lava cliffs.
The grottos are a refuge for Galápagos fur seals, and sea lions and the endemic Marchena lava lizard can be seen on the rocks. Underwater, the often clear water is home to rays, moray eels, green sea turtles and a great variety of colorful reef fish, and sharks pass in deeper water. Nazca and blue-footed boobies, red-billed tropicbirds and frigatebirds fly along the cliffs.
The site is explored by panga, snorkeling and diving. Because Marchena is far from the ports, there are no day tours, and only a few cruises and dive boats on northern routes come here.
