The holiday season in the islands

Why spend Christmas in Galápagos

December opens the warm season. The trade winds ease, the sea becomes calmer and clearer, and the water warms to about 23 °C (74 °F), comfortable for snorkeling. Days are sunny and warm, around 20–27 °C (68–80 °F) in December and up to 29 °C (84 °F) in January, with the occasional short shower that turns the islands green.

It is a season full of life. Green sea turtles court in the shallow bays and begin to come ashore to nest, and on Española the marine iguanas take on the red and green breeding colors that have earned them the name of Christmas iguanas.

Christmas and New Year are also the busiest weeks of the year. Cabins and flights to the islands sell out months ahead, so it pays to book early. Many yachts celebrate Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve on board: ask us how your yacht marks the night.

Book your Galápagos flights with us, together with your cruise: many cruise operators ask their guests to fly on the flights they reserve, and we book them at the net fare the operator gives us, with assistance at the airport in Quito or Guayaquil. We also recommend arriving in Ecuador two days before your Galápagos flight, in case your international flight is delayed or canceled.

Questions about holiday cruises

When should I book a Christmas or New Year cruise in Galápagos?

As early as you can. These are the busiest weeks of the year: many yachts sell out months ahead, and flights to the islands fill up too. If your dates are flexible, departures in early December or mid-January are easier to find.

Which departures are on board for Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve?

In the tables, departures marked “Christmas Eve on board” spend the night of 24 December on the yacht, and those marked “New Year’s Eve on board” the night of 31 December. This season, 12 departures are on board for Christmas Eve and 9 for New Year’s Eve.

What is the weather like at Christmas?

Warm and mostly sunny. December is the start of the warm season, with air temperatures of about 20–27 °C (68–80 °F), water around 23 °C (74 °F), calmer seas and only occasional short showers.

Do holiday cruises include the nights in Mindo?

Yes. Every cruise booked with Dana Tours includes complimentary nights at our own Las Terrazas de Dana Boutique Lodge & Spa in the Mindo Cloud Forest (usually 2–3, more on request), with all meals and private transfers from Quito, subject to the lodge’s availability on your dates. Departures marked ★ include our Mindo All-Inclusive program, with your own private guide.

Can you hold a cabin while I arrange my flights?

We can usually hold your cabin for 5–7 days, with no payment and no commitment. Holds and payment terms depend on the operator, availability and fare.
