Ecuador’s Amazon · Yasuní

The best Amazon lodges in Ecuador: Sani, Napo, Sacha and La Selva

Our recommended selection of eco-lodges in and around Yasuní National Park, one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. Two are owned and run by Kichwa communities, two are pioneering first-class lodges; all four combine perfectly with the Galápagos and Mindo Cloud Forest.

About Yasuní National Park

The most biodiverse place on Earth

The Amazon rainforest stretches across 5.5 million km² in nine countries: Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, French Guiana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela. Although it covers just 4% of the world’s land, around a third of all known plant, animal and insect species live here: more than 40,000 plant species, over 400 mammals, 1,300 bird species and millions of insects. More than 400 indigenous peoples live in the Amazon, and some of them have never had contact with the outside world.

Yasuní National Park

In the northeast of Ecuador, at the crossroads of the Equator, the Amazon and the Andes, Yasuní is considered one of the single most diverse areas in the world. It covers 9,820 km² (3,790 sq mi), was created in 1979 and was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1989. It is home to over 4,000 plant species, more than 170 mammals, 121 reptiles, 1,100 tree species, around 600 bird species and tens of thousands of insects, many of them found nowhere else.

The human side of Yasuní

The park lies in territory claimed by the Huaorani people, and two other peoples, the Tagaeri and the Taromenane, live there in voluntary isolation. To protect them and the park’s biodiversity, the Tagaeri-Taromenane Intangible Zone was created in 1999. Its wildlife and its living cultures make Yasuní a paradise for wildlife lovers and for travelers who want to meet Amazon communities. More about Yasuní.

Ecuador’s Amazon parks

On the Amazon side of the Andes, Ecuador protects parks such as Yasuní, Sumaco Napo-Galeras, Cayambe-Coca, Llanganates, Sangay, Podocarpus and Yacuri, plus the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve, the second largest in the country.

Questions

Ecuador Amazon lodges: good to know

Which is the best Amazon lodge in Ecuador?

It depends on what you want. For wildlife, Napo Wildlife Center, inside Yasuní. For the canopy and comfort, Sacha Lodge. For culture and families, Sani Lodge. For spa and wellness, La Selva.

How do I get to an Amazon lodge from Quito?

A 25–30 minute flight from Quito to Coca, then a motorized canoe down the Napo River (about 2 to 3 hours) and, for most lodges, a short walk and a paddle canoe.

How many nights should I stay?

Three nights is ideal for a first visit: enough time for the towers, the clay licks, the lakes and a community visit. Four nights if you are a keen birder or photographer.

How much does an Amazon lodge cost?

In 2026, from about US$1,290 per person for 2 nights at La Selva and US$1,890 for 3 nights at Sacha, plus US$260–280 for the flights. All meals, guides and excursions are included.

Can I combine the Amazon with the Galápagos and Mindo?

Yes, it is our favorite combination: the Galápagos for the islands’ wildlife, the Amazon for the rainforest and Mindo Cloud Forest in between. See our land tours.
