We recommend booking them with us, together with your cruise. Many yachts ask their guests to fly on the flights they reserve, because the crew meets the group at the Galápagos airport and the timing has to match the itinerary. You get assistance at the airport in Quito or Guayaquil on the day you fly, and we book your Galápagos flights at the net fare the cruise operator gives us. We also recommend arriving in Ecuador two days before your Galápagos flight, in case your international flight is delayed or canceled.

The highlands of Santa Cruz are the green heart of the Galápagos and the best place to see giant tortoises living in the wild. Most cruises visit them on the first or last day, on the road between Baltra and Puerto Ayora, or as a half-day excursion from the town.

Las Tintoreras is a group of small lava islets just off Puerto Villamil, on the south coast of Isabela, a few minutes by panga from the town's dock. Its name comes from the white-tipped reef sharks, tintoreras in Spanish, that rest in the calm water of a narrow lava channel on the largest islet.

The Wetlands of Isabela, Los Humedales in Spanish, are a chain of lagoons, mangrove swamps and small beaches that stretches west from Puerto Villamil along the south coast of the island. All four species of Galápagos mangrove grow here, red, black, white and button, and the area is one of the best places in the islands to see wetland birds.

The Arnaldo Tupiza Breeding Center, on the edge of Puerto Villamil, is where the Galápagos National Park breeds the giant tortoises of southern Isabela to return them to the wild. It opened in 1995, after a large fire on the south of the island threatened their habitat, and three years later it took in tortoises rescued from the slopes of Cerro Azul during an eruption.

Moreno Point, on the western shore of Isabela between the volcanoes of Sierra Negra and Cerro Azul, is a landscape of black lava dotted with surprising green oases. It is part of the western routes and one of the less visited sites of the Galápagos.

Mangle Point, Punta Mangle, lies on the east coast of Fernandina, the youngest and most volcanically active island of the Galápagos, facing Isabela across the Bolívar Channel. Besides Punta Espinoza, it is the only place on Fernandina where cruises stop, and it is visited from the water only.
More about Mangle Point (Punta Mangle) · Fernandina island guide

Espinosa Point, on the northeast tip of Fernandina, faces Isabela across the Bolívar Channel and is the main visitor site of the youngest island of the Galápagos. The landscape is almost entirely black lava, and the wildlife is found in a density few places can match.

Tagus Cove, on the west coast of Isabela, is a deep, sheltered bay that has served as an anchorage since the days of pirates and whalers. On its cliffs, sailors painted and carved the names of their ships, a tradition that began in the 1830s and is now protected as part of the islands' history; adding new names is forbidden.

Buccaneer Cove, on the northwest coast of Santiago, was a favorite hideout of the pirates and buccaneers who sailed the Pacific in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. In its sheltered water they careened their ships, collected fresh water and took giant tortoises on board as a living supply of meat for their long voyages.

Puerto Egas, on James Bay on the west coast of Santiago, is one of the most varied visits in the central islands. The panga lands on a beach of black volcanic sand, in a wet landing, below the old salt mine crater.

The walk on Bartolomé is one of the classic moments of a Galápagos cruise: the climb to the summit for the most photographed view in the islands, and a swim beside Pinnacle Rock. A dry landing at a small dock leads to a trail of about 600 meters to the top, 114 meters (375 feet) above the sea.

Sullivan Bay, on the east coast of Santiago, is a walk across one of the youngest and most beautiful lava fields in the Galápagos. The lava flowed here in the second half of the 1800s, and the surface is still almost bare: a shining black landscape of pahoehoe, the smooth, ropy lava that forms when molten rock cools in folds and twists.

Chinese Hat, or Sombrero Chino, is a small volcanic islet off the southeast coast of Santiago, named for its perfect cone shape. The yachts anchor in the narrow, sheltered channel that separates it from Santiago, one of the most beautiful anchorages in the Galápagos.

Dragon Hill, on the northwest coast of Santa Cruz, takes its name from the land iguanas that live on its slopes, the dragons of the Galápagos. It is also a conservation success: in 1976 feral dogs almost wiped out the iguanas of this coast, and the last survivors were taken to the Charles Darwin Research Station to breed.

Black Turtle Cove is a mangrove lagoon on the north shore of Santa Cruz, a nursery for many of the creatures of the Galápagos seas. There is no landing: the visit is a quiet panga ride, often with the engine turned off, as the guide paddles or drifts through the channels between the red mangroves.
