Concha de Perla: the free swim that surprises people
Concha de Perla is a shallow, mangrove-fringed tidal pool a short walk along the main road from the Puerto Villamil pier on Isabela, and it is the best argument for not over-scheduling this island. No ticket, no boat, no guide: walk the wooden boardwalk from the pier area, put your mask on, and share calm water with sea lions, turtles and schools of reef fish. It is one of the very few genuinely good snorkel sites in Galápagos you can simply show up at — free access, no booking, no fixed hours, the only genuinely free snorkel site of its kind in the archipelago. A rope line marks the swimming boundary; stay inside it.
What it is
Picture a natural swimming pool behind the beach line: mangroves around the edge, a sandy-and-rocky bottom, water that connects to the bay through a narrow entrance. The mangroves filter the water and shelter the young stuff; the bay entrance brings in the visitors. Depth stays modest, which is why it works for all ages, and the platform/rocks at the edge make getting in and out easy.
What you will see
- Galápagos sea lions: the resident group treats swimmers as part of the furniture, and the young ones will check you out at speed.
- Green sea turtles, feeding on the seagrass, tolerant and close.
- Schools of reef fish, small rays resting on the bottom, and the odd penguin passing through in the cool season.
- Iguanas drying on the mangrove roots at the edge, in classic Isabela fashion.
Visibility swings with tide and swell; on a calm, clear day it competes with some paid tours, and on a stirred-up day it is a pleasant swim rather than a spectacle. How to do it right
- Go at high tide or on a calm morning: the pool is shallow and the entrance silts up when the sea is rough.
- Bring your own mask and fins or rent in Villamil town; water shoes help over the rocky patches.
- Reef-safe sunscreen only, applied well before you get in; better yet, a rash guard and no sunscreen in the water. The park restricts sunscreens with oxybenzone and octinoxate, which harm marine life.
- Two metres from the animals, no touching, no feeding, the park rules apply here exactly as on any visitor site.
- Do not leave valuables on the beach; there is no lockbox and no attendant.
Where it fits
Concha de Perla is the free complement to the paid water day on Isabela: after Los Túneles or a Sierra Negra morning, it costs nothing to float for an hour before dinner, and sunset on the beach next door is the island’s daily ritual.
