Puerto Baquerizo Moreno guide
Puerto Baquerizo Moreno is the official capital of the province, the oldest settlement in the archipelago (founded in the mid-1800s), and the second town in population with roughly 7,000 residents. It sits on San Cristóbal, it has its own airport a short walk from the centre, and its beach is a sea lion colony that the town treats like neighbours. Travellers arrive here for one main reason: the water off San Cristóbal holds the best combination of snorkel trips in the central islands, led by Kicker Rock.
The town itself
Two streets do the work: the malecón along the waterfront, named Malecón Charles Darwin, lined with restaurants and hotels, and the street behind it. Everything is walkable in fifteen minutes. Playa Mann, at the edge of the centre, is reserved in practice for its permanent residents, the sea lions, and swimming with them is a legitimate morning plan. For an island capital it is a small, calm place, and the airport being in town changes how you can plan a trip: San Cristóbal works as either your first island or your last one without a backtracking day.
The water: Kicker Rock and company
Kicker Rock (León Dormido), the split lava tower off the west coast, is the signature trip: a snorkel circuit of four to five hours typically runs $160-200 per person, with dive trips costing more (check current rates). Hammerheads, Galápagos sharks, rays and turtles are the draw; our Kicker Rock guide covers what the trip is like. Closer to town, free snorkelling works too: Las Tijeretas, a sheltered cove past the Interpretation Center, is one of the few good sites you can swim at without a tour, and Playa Mann doubles as a warm-up.
Beyond Kicker Rock, operators run the “360” tour that circles much of the island, and boat trips toward Punta Pitt in the northeast, one of the few places where all three booby species nest together.
The highlands loop
San Cristóbal packs three very different highland stops into one taxi circuit, and hiring a taxi for the loop is the standard way to do it: recent quotes run $60-70 per taxi for the combination (up to 4 people), around $120 booked as a private operator tour — agree the price with the driver before leaving town:
- Laguna El Junco, a freshwater crater lake up in the garúa, reached by a 45-minute ride from town. The park caps it at 64 visitors and asks groups to coordinate 24 hours ahead.
- La Galapaguera de Cerro Colorado, a tortoise breeding centre about 22 km out of town, in the San Cristóbal tortoise’s own habitat.
- Puerto Chino, a white sand beach with a snorkelable cove at the end of the road.
The Interpretation Center at the edge of town is free and genuinely useful; pair it with the short trail to Las Tijeretas and Punta Carola, where beginner surfers share the break with more frigatebirds than people.
Puerto Ayora or Puerto Baquerizo as your base?
Our honest take: Puerto Ayora has more tours and better restaurants; Puerto Baquerizo has better free sites, a more local feel, and the single best day trip of the three towns in Kicker Rock. If you fly into San Cristóbal, spend two or three nights here before ferrying across to Santa Cruz, rather than rushing it in a morning. The airport choice matters more than people expect, and the ferry timetable decides how many real touring days each island gives you.
