7 days in Galápagos: the itinerary we actually recommend

Seven days is the sweet spot for Galápagos: long enough for three islands without ferry-rush, short enough to stay affordable. The version below is land-based (Santa Cruz → Isabela → San Cristóbal), because that is what most of our guests build; after it we give the hybrid variant, a 4-5 day cruise plus hotel days, which is the strongest wildlife-per-dollar shape if the budget allows. Fixed costs first, because they frame everything: flights $400-550 round trip per person, the $20 TCT, the $200 park fee on arrival, and $50 per ferry leg for tourists since August 2026 (half price for children under 12).

Day 1: Arrive Baltra → Puerto Ayora

• Land at Baltra (flights from Quito or Guayaquil take about 2-2.5 hours with the technical stop), pay the $200 park fee at the counter, catch the airport bus ($5), canal ferry ($1.50) and taxi into Puerto Ayora.
• Afternoon: Charles Darwin Research Station, an easy walk from town, to set the conservation context before you see the wild side.
• Evening: the pier, where the fish market lights attract pelicans, sea lions and the occasional shark.

Day 2: Santa Cruz: Tortuga Bay and the town’s water

• Morning: walk the paved 2.5 km path to Tortuga Bay. Playa Brava for the iguanas and the walk, Playa Mansa for the swim.
• Afternoon: Las Grietas for the lava-walls swim (32-person cap, $10 guide fee; check current rules), or a water taxi to Playa de los Perros.
• This day costs almost nothing, which offsets the fixed costs nicely.

Day 3: Santa Cruz, highlands or day tour

Choose your budget line:

• Highlands half-day: El Chato tortoise reserve, lava tunnels and Los Gemelos by taxi, US$40–50 for the taxi with the driver waiting plus the US$10 entry at El Chato, and lunch if you take the ranch lunch.
• Full day tour: North Seymour or Bartolomé by boat, typically $220-280 per person (check current rates). North Seymour is the frigatebird and blue-footed booby show; Bartolomé is the postcard with Pinnacle Rock.

Day 4: Ferry to Isabela (07:00)

• The morning boat is the calm one: 2-2.5 hours, take motion sickness medication 30 minutes out if you are prone.
• On arrival in Puerto Villamil you pay Isabela’s $10 local fee. Afternoon is free and should be: the beach, the wetlands boardwalks, and a swim at Concha de Perla.
• Cash check: Isabela has no bank and no reliable ATM; bring dollars from Santa Cruz.

Day 5: Isabela, Los Túneles or Sierra Negra

Pick your adrenaline:

• Los Túneles by boat, our pick for the best snorkel tour in the archipelago: arches, seahorses, whitetip sharks, around $150 (check current rates).
• Sierra Negra on foot: 16 km round trip to one of the largest calderas on earth with a mandatory guide, typically $30-50.
• Both in one day is possible in theory and miserable in practice; choose one, beach in the afternoon.

Day 6: Ferry to San Cristóbal (transfer day)

There is no direct Isabela → San Cristóbal boat: you ferry back to Santa Cruz (06:00 departure) and catch the 15:00 to San Cristóbal, which makes this a travel day, 5-6 hours door to door with a long Puerto Ayora lunch in the middle. Plan nothing else. If your route runs the other direction (San Cristóbal first), this day mirrors itself.

Day 7: San Cristóbal, Kicker Rock or the free circuit, then fly out

• Morning: Kicker Rock snorkel trip ($160-200, check current rates) if your flight is late-day, most are, from the town airport.
• Or the free version: Las Tijeretas, the Interpretation Center trail and Playa Mann’s sea lions.
• Fly San Cristóbal → Guayaquil or Quito.

The hybrid: cruise + hotel days

If the islands’ remote wildlife is the reason you are coming, spend 4-5 nights on a boat covering the far islands, then 2-3 hotel days for the free sites and the highlands. The land days then cost you food, a hotel and nothing else, and you return to the mainland rested rather than salt-cured.
