April is the last full month of the warm season, and it might be the best all-rounder of the year. The albatross are back on Española and mid-courtship, green turtle and land iguana hatchlings are emerging, the sea is calm and clear, and air temperatures have eased a degree or two from March’s peak. You get the warm season’s wildlife highlights without its very hottest, wettest extremes.
If a guest asks us for one month that pleases birders, snorkellers and families at once, April is usually the answer, with a single asterisk about Easter week.

Weather in April
Air averages 30 °C high and 22 °C low. The rain begins to tail off compared with March, though you will still see warm-season showers. Days are mostly sunny; the landscape stays green from the wet months. April is what people picture when they imagine tropical but not oppressive, and the evenings on deck are the most comfortable of the warm season.
The sea in April
Calm sea and the best underwater visibility of the year: the warm Panama current water is clear and settled. Water temperature is around 24 °C by operators’ averages; satellite surface readings at Puerto Ayora average 26 °C. Most snorkellers are comfortable without a wetsuit, though on longer sessions a shorty keeps you warm. The north-swell risk from March fades through April, but it can still linger early in the month on itineraries with northern coastlines. Wildlife in April
April’s wildlife calendar is stacked:
- Mass waved albatross courtship on Española. The whole population is back by mid-April, and Punta Suárez hosts the world’s only nesting colony. The courtship choreography, the bill-circling and the clacking, peaks now. This is the single best reason to visit in April, and the colony remains through the dry season. - Green sea turtle hatching (April to June). Eggs laid from January to March start producing hatchlings that scramble for the sea. On beaches like Las Bachas on Santa Cruz and Punta Cormorant on Floreana you have a real chance of seeing the dash, with the sobering footnote that roughly one hatchling in a thousand reaches adulthood.
- Land iguana hatchlings on Isabela. Eggs laid months ago hatch now, so young iguanas appear in the Isabela breeding areas; the land iguana page has the sites.
- End of giant tortoise hatching. The hatching season that began in December wraps up.
- Frigatebirds still displaying. The red-pouch season runs to June on San Cristóbal and Genovesa.
Where to go in April
Española, without question, for the albatross; any itinerary that includes it is the April itinerary. The southern and central loops add Floreana’s turtle beaches and Santa Cruz. North Seymour and San Cristóbal give the frigatebird displays. The west is good but not essential this month. Land-based travellers can do a San Cristóbal base with a day trip to Española in season, which is one of the few ways to see the albatross without a cruise; the Española guide explains the options.
Crowds, prices and departures in April
April splits around Semana Santa, Easter week: the week itself books out early with Ecuadorian travellers, and the shoulder weeks are quieter. Outside Easter, demand is moderate and boats have space.

What to pack for April
The warm-season kit: quick-dry clothing, a light rain shell for the occasional shower, hat, reef-safe mineral sunscreen, rash guard, a dry bag for the panga, and closed shoes for the Punta Suárez trail, which is long and rocky. Who April suits, and who should wait
- Birders. Albatross courtship is the headline, but land birds stay active and the colonies are noisy.
- Snorkellers. The warmest, calmest, clearest stretch of sea; if you measure a trip by hours in the water, April is a top pick.
- Families and first-timers. Calm crossings, warm air, hatchlings on the beaches.
- Photographers. Courtship displays plus hatchling dashes to the sea.
Think twice if you arrive in the first days of April with the albatross as your only goal (book the second half of the month for certainty), if your dates land on Easter week and you have not booked, or if heat and humidity wear you down. March is the month before, May the month after, and all twelve are compared in best time to visit Galápagos.
Frequently asked questions
Is April the best month to visit Galápagos?
For many travellers, yes: calm, clear and warm water, the albatross courtship on Española, turtle hatchlings on the beaches and air a notch cooler than March. Its only drawback is Easter week, when Ecuadorian demand fills flights and some boats.
When is the albatross courtship at its best?
From mid-April into May. The first birds arrive in late March, the colony fills during April, and the bill-clacking courtship peaks once most pairs are reunited. Eggs are laid from mid-April to June.
Can I see turtle hatchlings in April?
Yes, with luck. Hatching runs from April to June on the nesting beaches, and the hatchlings run to the sea at night or at dawn. Early-morning beach walks with your guide give the best odds; it is never guaranteed.
Do I need a wetsuit in April?
Usually not. The water is around 24–26 °C and visibility is at its best. A shorty helps only on long sessions or if you chill easily.
